On Submitting Proposals to the Fund


The Newspaper Fund welcomes unsolicited proposals for grants as long as they directly relate to the foundation�s mission of encouraging students to pursue careers in journalism and the major program areas outlined in this report.

The Fund may also, from time to time, announce special programs and seek grant proposals for the operation of those programs. The Fund does not award grants to publish commercial or college newspapers or underwrite special events.

Grant proposals must be submitted not later than October 1 of each year to allow ample time for consideration by the Newspaper Fund�s board of directors. Earlier notification of intent to submit proposals is encouraged.

Deadlines for Nominations and Proposals

National High School Journalism Teacher Awards Program
� Description: To recognize high school journalism teachers who have made outstanding contributions to teaching journalism and/ or advising high school newspapers or news Web sites
� Eligible: Any high school journalism teacher or adviser with at least three years of teaching experience. Nominations may come from principals, newspaper editors, other teachers, students, alumni, press associations or the teachers themselves.
� Awards: $1,000 college scholarship for a student of the Teacher of the Year; $500 college scholarships for a student of each of the four Distinguished Advisers
� Deadline: July 1

High School Journalism Workshops for Minorities
� Description: To encourage minority high school students to consider careers in journalism by providing an opportunity to work with professional journalists and instructors on reporting, writing and editing a student newspaper
� Eligible: Colleges, schools, nonprofit organizations
� Grant: $2,500 up to $5,000
� Deadline: October 1

Centers for Editing Excellence
� Description: To provide two weeks of intensive training for college juniors, seniors and graduate students, selected through the Newspaper Fund�s Newspaper Editing Intern Program, who will work professionally as copy editing interns for newspapers and news services
� Eligible: Colleges or nonprofit organizations
� Grant: Maximum of $20,000 for 10 students
� Deadline: October 1

Newspaper Editing Intern Program
� Description: To encourage students to consider copy editing as a career in newspaper journalism by providing training, a summer internship and scholarship grants
� Eligible: All college juniors; seniors and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in newspaper journalism
� Grant: $1,000
� Deadline: November 1

Sports Editing Program
� Description: To encourage students to consider sports copy editing as a career by providing training, paid summer internships and scholarship grants
� Eligible: All college juniors; seniors and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in newspaper journalism
� Grant: $1,000
� Deadline: November 1

Online Editing Program
� Description: To encourage students to consider online copy editing as a career by providing training, paid summer internships and scholarship grants
� Eligible: All college juniors; seniors and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in online journalism
� Grant: $1,000
� Deadline: November 1

Business Reporting Internship Program
� Description: To encourage minority college sophomores to seek newspaper reporting internships early in their academic careers.
� Eligible: Members of minority groups who are entering their junior year or second semester of their sophomore year in college
� Grant: $1,000
