NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The death Monday morning in a California automobile accident of David Halberstam, Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent and noted author, felt like a personal loss, though I met the former New York Timesman, whose name will always be linked to the Vietnam War, only once.

2007 Roster of Programs Includes Online Training Site

The board of directors of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund approved $504,250 in grants and operating expenses for 2007 programs for high school and college students and high school journalism teachers, including funding a new training site for its online editing internships.

The Fund will operate nine Centers for Editing Excellence, adding a site at Western Kentucky University, where college interns will train before beginning their online editing internships, a program added this year in partnership with Yahoo! News.

Former Teacher of the Year Elected JEA President

Jack Kennedy, 1993 Dow Jones Newspaper Fund National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year, leads the slate of officers elected to the board of the Journalism Education Association in March. Their terms begin July 1 and end in June 2009. (more)

Health Policy Fellowships Offered by Kaiser Family Foundation

The Kaiser Media Fellowship Program will award up to 10 fellowships to print, television, radio and online journalists interested in health policy issues.


Reynolds Institutes to Inspire High School Advisers

The American Society of Newspaper Editors will receive a $2.3 million, three-year grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation to provide intensive two-week training programs to enable high school teachers to become effective journalism advisers.
