Free Spirit Scholarship and Conference Accepting Applications

The Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Conference Program is now accepting applications. The program annually awards $1,000 college scholarships to 102 high school seniors who are interested in pursuing journalism careers and who demonstrate qualities of "free spirit." The postmark deadline is October 15.  (more)

Wayne M. Brasler, a 1981 High School Journalism National Teacher of the Year award winner, will receive a 2007 Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism.

Newspaper Fund Expands Reporting Internship Program

The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund has broadened the business reporting internship program to include college seniors in summer 2008.

The business reporting program originated in 1995 recruiting minority college sophomores and juniors. Continuing its commitment to diversity, the program will accept applications from seniors.

The reprised online internship program, supported by a continuing commitment from Yahoo! News at Western Kentucky University enters its second year.

Dow Jones & Company and News Corporation announced that they have signed a definitive merger agreement under which News Corporation will acquire Dow Jones in a transaction valued at approximately $5.6 billion.

Newspaper Fund Mourns the Passing of Richard Ramirez

The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Richard Ramirez, veteran journalist and assistant to the executive editor at the San Jose Mercury News. Rich was a 1983 Newspaper Fund editing intern at the Hartford Courant in Connecticut, after attending the Temple University training workshop.

Fund to Send 104 Interns Into U.S. Newsrooms

Despite sharp cutbacks in the nation’s newsrooms, the newspaper industry continues to invest in its future by maintaining strong support for the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.

Amid one of the most difficult economic periods in the history of the newspaper business, the Newspaper Fund announced that it has placed 104 copy editing, business reporting and online interns in U.S. newsrooms this summer. This is down only slightly from the 112 interns placed last summer.
