Advisers who attend Summer Workshop � with or without their students � will be in their own core group with an experienced instructor, Dr. Julie Dodd, professor in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida. This core group is designed for high school publication advisers who are interested in enhancing their journalism knowledge and skills. Topics will include teaching interviewing and writing, media law and ethics, photography and design. The group will also discuss identifying and using teaching resources, developing a staff manual and business plan, as well as staff selection and management. Activities include individual and team projects and hands-on assignments. NOTE: This workshop is geared specifically to the needs of new advisers (1-3 years experience).

Courses: Participants will complete 35 journalism assignments and have the opportunity to attend several press conference, learn how to cover a simulated breaking crime story, cover a trial, write a football game story, conduct an interview, report on a simulated major disaster, prepare a magazine story, learn editing techniques, have their high school newspapers critiqued, practice online journalism, produce and tape a television newscast, and shoot and process news photographs. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Instructors are: Steve Harvey, feature writer and columnist; Art Aguilar, community newspaper editor and publisher; Stan Kelton, First Amendment specialist; Jay Berman, journalism professor; Gil Chesterton, journalism adviser; Janet Eastman, life and style editor; Rich Hammond, sports writer; Todd Harmonson, sports reporter; Scott Harris, columnist and freelance; Pat Mott, freelance and a novelist; Lance Orosco, television reporter; Chris Carlson, photographer; Nicole Vargan, reporter; and Larry Welborn, legal affairs reporter.
Cost: $925 for meals, lodging and some supplies, transportation to and from San Obispo is the family�s responsibility. There are a limited number of partial scholarships.

Student Media Workshop
One-Day workshop from 8:30 to 3:30 on June 24 is free to New Hampshire high school students, lunch not included. Students will learn about ethics, First Amendment, interviewing, writing, editing, design and photography from an instructional staff featuring veteran journalists from The Citizen, New Hampshire's Union Leader, WMUR-TV and other experts. Skills will be put to the test by developing, designing and producing news coverage of a special guest speaker.
